Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick just announced at DICE that his company will be sponsoring an independent video game competition with a prize of 500 large. Right now, details are sparse, but various sites will doubtless be following up with the juicy questions that all you potential Miyamotos are dying to ask, so stay tuned.
It's always nice to see companies sponsor contests like this. Readers will recall not long ago when movie rental giant Netflix sponsored a similar challenge offering a million dollar prize to whoever could come up with the best way to improve the efficiency of their service. Participation was through the roof, and the gamble more than paid off for Netflix.
I'm sure there are thousands of designers out there just waiting for a break like this. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.
