If you're a proud owner of a PS3 fat and you've tried to run your system since around 8 p.m. EST last night, then you may have noticed a slight hiccup with your beloved "does everything" machine -- slight hiccup meaning it now does absolutely nothing.
Many people (myself included) have been reporting an '8001050F' error screen which apparently resets the internal clock to 12/31/99, renders downloaded games unplayable, kicks people from their PSN accounts, causes some disc based games to crash, prevents people from watching blu-rays, as well as corrupts trophy data, and, in some cases, even save data.
As yet, the cause of the problem is still unclear, but what is perhaps the most frightening is that it's even affecting unconnected PS3 fats -- a fact that suggests a more systemic hardware issue. Joystiq has inquired to Sony but thus far their only response has been that they're "looking into it." The leading theory however is that it is some kind of date/time bug.
Let's hope that a fix is sent out soon and that everyone's trophy/save data is safe, and purchased games run smoothly -- or there will be a reckoning.
