The debate on whether or not video games encourage our youths to become mindless killing husks has become exceedingly tiresome over the years. But if you're a gamer in California, the issue is more than academic.
Today, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not to strike down a 2005 law signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger banning the sale of video games that include "killing, maiming, dismembering or sexually assaulting an image of a human being" to anyone under the age of 18.
Proponents of the law argue, as so many have before, that violence in games leads to violence in children. They liken the law as being related to governmental regulation of pornography, tobacco, and alcohol. Opponents on the other hand, point out that the already in place ESRB ratings system is sufficient, and that the law is excessive and paints an unrealistic picture of video games.
A final decision isn't expected until the fall, when the court will begin hearing arguments. Let's all hope that this silly fear-mongering gets recognized for what it is.
